Eleventh Annual PSO Young Artist Competition

About the Competition...
This competition is open to student instrumentalists (piano, strings, winds, or percussion) under the age of 19 as of February 20th, 2012. Applicants must also be a resident of one of the following Virginia counties:
Clarke, Culpeper, Fauquier, Prince William, Stafford, Spotsylvania, or Warren (or independent cities within those counties). Current PSO student musicians are eligible to enter. Students who have been a first place winner in a previous PSO or PRO Young Artist Competition are NOT eligible to enter.

Required Repertoire: one movement of any instrumental piece composed for solo instrument (piano, strings, winds, or percussion) and orchestra.

To enter, send a high quality cassette audition tape or CD consisting of the required repertoire played by the instrumentalist with piano acccompaniment, plus the audition form, photo/video release form and the $25.00 non-refundable audition fee to: Debbie Gilbert, 5118 Laurel Lane, Broad Run, VA 20137. (Pianists are not required to play with piano accompaniment.) Make checks payable to: "Piedmont Symphony Orchestra." Label casssette tapes or CD with name of instrumentalist, school and title of piece.
Audition Process:
I. Taped auditions will be evaluated and semi-finalists will be chosen. Semi-finalists will be notified by November 1, 2011.
2. Semi-finalists will perform the required repertoire, with a live accompanist, before a panel of judges on November 12, 2011. Each semi-finalist must provide his/her own accompanist. Three finalists will be chosen from this audition.
3. The three finalists will rehearse their repertoire with the PSO, and compete for the Grand Prize, as featured performers with the PSO, in the Young People's concert on February 19th, 2012, at Highland's Center for the Arts. A panel of judges will evaluate the finalists at the concert and award first, second, and third place scholarship awards.

First Place Grand Prize Winner will receive a $1500.00 scholarship award
Second Place Winner will receive a $750.00 scholarship award
Third Place Winner will receive a $500.00 scholarship award

Scholarship money will be paid by PSO directly to the college, summer music program, or other program that will further the musical education of the winner. Winners are responsible for notifying the PSO of the name of the organization and address where the check should be sent.
