PSO Digital Media & Technology

The Piedmont Symphony Orchestra embraces technology to fulfill its mission and to reach a greater audience. Among the many ways orchestras use technology today, the PSO has pioneered many "firsts" in its use of new measures to enhance the concert experience, communicate with patrons, and look to the future.

mobile
In 2008, the PSO became among the first orchestras to develop a fully functional website designed specifically for smart mobile devices. PSO 4 Mobile offers all of the features of its regular website, in addition to features for social networking and navigation based on a user's location.
To access PSO 4 Mobile, enter www.piedmontsymphony.org/mobile.html from your phone's mobile browser

scanlife

Also in 2008, the PSO partnered with SCANLIFE to become the first orchestra worldwide to implement 2D barcodes into its printed materials. Its purpose is to allow visually impaired concertgoers access to pre-recorded commentary on works being performed at its concerts, and information about the season. Additional features include sending text and email reminders of upcoming calendar events directly to patrons.

The 2D Barcodes or EZcodes can be used in conjunction with most camera cell phones and provide an instant link to an outside information source once snapped with the phone's camera. The 2D Barcode reading software, called ScanLife, is available for free download on over 100 camera phone models (go to www.getscanlife.com on your mobile browser).

"This is an excellent example of how 2D barcodes can quickly activate the mobile device as a multi-functional tool," said Jonathan Bulkeley, Chief Executive Officer of Scanbuy. We are thrilled that our technology can be used to aid the visually impaired and hopefully improve the concert-going experience."

VIDEO PODCASTS

In 2006, PSO Music Director Glenn Quader developed one of the first video podcast series for an American orchestra, which was featured by the League of American Orchestras in its Symphony magazine, as well as at its annual conference in Nashville. This work also garnered a $20,000 technology grant for the 2007 N-Power Greater DC Region Technology Innovation Award.
